Students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) suffered immensely during previous Administration. Ajimobi led Regime showed utter lackadaisical attitude to the plight of LAUTECH students. They used more than 2 years at home for avoidable strike plus the constant increments in tuition fee.
All the attempts of student’s leaders from the Institution to appeal to the Government were exercise in futility. The popular nomenclature given to Abiola Ajimobi (Constituted Authority) was earned during one of those struggles by LAUTECH student’s in Ibadan to have their University reopened.
Tenure of Constituted Authority was coming to an end in 2019, the students of LAUTECH just like every other citizens of Oyo State needed to make a decision between supporting the Status Quo or gunning for a New Dawn.
Just like it was in every other parts of Nigeria, the two most popular political parties toward the election were APC and PDP. Being a candidate of the ruling party, Adelabu Penkelemesi of APC stood for Status Quo while Seyi Makinde who flew the ticket of PDP represented Fresh Water.
At the heat of campaign, the two leading candidates were going from one nook to another cranny soliciting for votes. It is an established fact that most Government Institutions would be Pro-Ruling Party and most times, they wouldn’t give their facilities to oppositions.
While LAUTECH Management made declaration that Students of LAUTECH shouldn’t welcome Opposition candidate, the Student Union President, Abiodun Oluwaseun popularly known as Laurel stood tall, dared the Authority and joined his voice with that of his fellow students, the students wanted a departure from Status Quo and their leader led them through the Journey without fair or favour as they welcomed GSM with melodious songs, dexterous dances and sonorous drums.
Without the Shepherd, the Sheep are helpless. If Laurel decided not to lead the students to welcome Seyi Makinde, probably GSM might not have had such a louder ovation that added glamour to his campaign. Laurel also had opportunities of selling his conscience and to negotiate with oppressors (Ajimobi led APC) for selfish gains but he defiled all odds and stood against unproductive and oppressive Status Quo even when he knew that the consequences might be grave to his education if otherwise happened. He was determined and chose to stand with the truth.
Immediately after GSM was hosted by LAUTECH students, probably from the order from above, LAUTECH Management suspended Union President and also planning expulsion for him after the election. As man proposes towards left, God disposes toward right. Opposition party who was the favourite of LAUTECH students won the election. The victory was for general students but also specially for Abiodun Oluwaseun Laurel.
The single decision of the SUG President has afforded LAUTECH Communities many unprecedented opportunities. Tuition fee was reduced, Under G Road that connected LAUTECH with town was completed, Sole Ownership of LAUTECH was secured, and finally, Strike has become a thing of the past.
There may be some rewards for loyalty, but there is always a greater reward for standing with the truth. Today, Abiodun Oluwaseun Laurel was rewarded for standing with the truth. He was appointed as the Special Assistant to the Working Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde on Project Delivery. Joining the comrade commmunity to celebrate you on your appointment, May you have the full wisdom to deliver on your mandate.
